Alright you guys. We all know I’m a huge fan of bliss balls, protein bites, energy balls, and/or collagen bites – whatever you want to call them. This zesty orange gingerbread flavor is perfect for the holidays, and inspired by my favorite thing to do this time of year. If you’ve been following me in Instagram stories recently, you might have a clue as to what that is…
Simmering orange and cinnamon sticks over the stove might be my favorite thing about this time of year. There’s just something so cozy and comforting about the smell that I love.
Wanna know how much? The fact that I turn the stove on before changing into my PJs when I get home from work says enough for itself. Because let’s be honest, if you’re anything like me, changing into comfy clothes the second you walk in the door is a top priority.
But during the holidays, turning that stove on takes precedence.
I just fill a saucepan about 3/4 of the way, throw in one sliced orange, a couple cinnamon sticks, AND if I’m feelin’ crazy, a couple dashes of almond extract. As soon as the water evaporates, I just keep adding more, and pretty much re-use that mixture for (at least) three days. All you gotta do is just add some more water when the level gets too low.
Okay. SO – this recipe. Gingerbread just SCREAMS the holidays, amiright? These zesty orange gingerbread balls help satisfy my craving for my all time fave Christmas cookies. Chewy molasses (lookin’ at you Les, waiting on a fresh batch of them 😉 ) and gingerbread cookies. What are your faves???
I take my classic protein bite recipe using minimal ingredients and add some holiday flare, thanks to inspo by my fave simmering smells.

Method: No-Bake
Description
Inspired by my favorite smells of the holidays, these zesty orange gingerbread bliss balls help satisfy a sweet craving without diving head first into the cookie jar.
Ingredients
- 9 Medjool dates – Pit removed and soaked in hot water for 15 minute
- 1/2 Inch fresh ginger – This gives you about 1 Tsp of ginger once you grate it using a zester
- 1 TBSP ground cinnamon
- 1/4 Cup almond butter – I used Barney Butter brand for these
- 1/2 Tsp Allspice
- 1/2 Cup Almond flour
- 1/4 Cup Collagen peptides – I use Great Lakes, Vital Proteins or Bullet Proof
- The Zest of one Orange
Instructions
In a food processor, pulse the dates, almond butter, allspice and cinnamon until a paste forms. Then, grate fresh ginger and zest the orange right into the mixture, and pulse again (personal preference on how much is used here). Add in the remaining dry ingredients, and continue to pulse until a dough forms.
Chill dough for 15 minutes before rolling into balls. I love using my 1 TBSP scooper to roll the balls!
Notes
Store in the fridge for up to a week! These are my favorite “treat” or pre-workout snack.
