Anyone else agree that the best part about making cookies is eating the cookie dough? Well, you can now have that same excitement when making cupcakes with this chocolate chip cookie dough frosting recipe.
Not only does this post contain what I believe to be some pretty damn good frosting, but I’m also sharing my tip on how I frost the cupcakes using it as well.
…and I think it is pretty appropriate to be releasing this recipe on #NationalDessertDay (even though it made it’s debut in the office on Thursday to celebrate a co-worker’s birthday).
This chocolate chip cookie dough frosting recipe is most definitely not in the “healthy” category on this blog, but to be honest, that’s why I’m glad I make the rules here 🙂 in my mind, sometimes you just have to have a decadent dessert, and this one is sure to please.
So, before we dive into the recipe, let’s chat about how to frost them. As much as I love the homemade look of frosting that hasn’t been piped on with a bag, I sometimes find that it actually takes longer to achieve that “look”. I take way too much time on each individual cupcake when I frost them, and sometimes you just need a quicker way of doing things. Enter: the scooper.
My cookie dough scooper is the real MVP (and time saver) here.
This is one of my most used kitchen tools, whether it be for baking, scooping some homemade pesto sauce into ice cube trays to save for later (if you follow me on Instagram you know this is a hack I use alllll the time), or making protein bites…list goes on and on. NOW I’m adding one more trick to the list with frosting mini cupcakes.
Can we also all agree that anything mini is just the BEST?
And best part? Scooping out the frosting and topping the cupcakes with it takes less than 5 seconds per cupcake. You’re welcome.Print
You’ll want to eat this right from the bowl, just like when you make a batch of chocolate chip cookies. BUT with this, there’s no label advising you against doing so 🙂
- 1 cup Powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup Unbleached Flour
- 1/2 cup Brown sugar (or coconut sugar)
- 10 TBSP Room temp butter (I use Kerrygold unsalted)
- 3 TBSP Crisco (anyone else think of the movie The Help when you hear this 😏)
- 2 TBSP coconut milk (or milk of choice)
- 2 TBSP Vanilla extract
- 1/4 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
With an electric mixer, cream the butter, crisco and sugar together for about 2 minutes (aka mix until you have a fluffy yellow mixture). Add in your vanilla and coconut milk and mix again. Slowly add all dry ingredients and finish off with chocolate chips!

…also lol that this frosting is the background picture of my phone. No shame.
